Car Park Improvements

Plans have now emerged for the next phase of major improvements to Chessington World of Adventures’ South Car Park.

The latest proposals focus on the Flamingo Car Park, which forms one of four main parking fields within the wider South Car Park. If approved, the works would continue Chessington’s phased programme of upgrading this important part of the resort.

For years, much of the South Car Park has relied on grass parking areas. However, those fields can struggle badly during prolonged wet weather. Surface water regularly creates difficult conditions, particularly throughout the colder months. Therefore, Chessington has gradually started introducing more permanent infrastructure across the site.

Phase 1 concentrated on the main access routes through the South Car Park. The resort added twin-lane roads, improved kerbing and significantly better pedestrian pathways. As a result, both vehicles and guests now move through the area more easily.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 shifted attention towards the Macaw Car Park. That work introduced Geogrid parking bays alongside new tarmac roadways. Chessington also installed improved drainage across the sloping site. In addition, the project delivered new electric vehicle charging facilities.

Now, Phase 3 looks set to continue that same approach within the neighbouring Flamingo Car Park.

The newly submitted plans propose further infrastructure upgrades across the field. These include more durable parking areas, improved road surfaces and drainage measures designed around the existing landscape. Importantly, Flamingo would become the second of the four South Car Park fields to receive this style of upgrade.

However, the remaining two fields would continue to operate largely as grass parking areas. Consequently, wet weather could still create problems elsewhere within the wider car park. Even so, the latest application marks another important step in Chessington’s long-term infrastructure programme.

Car park improvements rarely generate the same excitement as a new attraction. Nevertheless, they can make a huge difference to the guest experience. Better drainage, stronger parking surfaces and improved roadways should all help create a more reliable arrival area throughout the year.
