The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure

Step into the Wild Woods and drift gently into one of Chessington World of Adventures‘ most charming adventures. The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure invites you to float through a storybook world, but its roots stretch much further back than you might expect.

Originally opening in 1990 as Professor Burp’s Bubbleworks, this indoor boat ride formed part of the park’s gothic Transylvania area alongside Vampire. Back then, guests toured a chaotic Bavarian fizzy pop factory, owned by the wonderfully eccentric Professor Burp. His famous motto, “Juice + Gas = POP!”, perfectly captured the ride’s playful spirit. As a result, it quickly became a fan favourite, packed with jokes, gags and quirky scenes.

However, things changed in 2006. The park rethemed the attraction and relaunched it as simply The Bubbleworks. With the introduction of a sponsor, much of the original charm disappeared. Although the ride system remained, the park removed much of the heart and humour that defined Professor Burp’s factory. As a result, many fans left feeling disappointed.

Then, in 2016, a new chapter began. The park announced that the factory would close its doors for good in September, marking the end of an era. Consequently, anticipation grew as Chessington prepared to breathe new life into the classic ride.

In March 2017, The Gruffalo River Ride Adventure officially opened, transforming the space from top to bottom. While the original ride system stayed, everything else changed. Guests now join Mouse on a magical journey through the beloved story by Julia Donaldson, featuring familiar characters and scenes along the way. Moreover, the detailed sets, vibrant lighting and modern effects bring the tale vividly to life.

Although nostalgia for Bubbleworks still lingers, the Gruffalo River Ride Adventure quickly earned its own place as a modern classic. It successfully introduced a new generation to this iconic attraction while still honouring its legacy. So, whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, this enchanting river journey remains a must-ride experience at Chessington.
